Is ABS plastic flame-retardant?

ABS plastic, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene copolymer, is a material with excellent rigidity, toughness, and processability, and is commonly used in various household appliance components. Without the addition of flame retardants, ABS plastic has an oxygen index of 18–20, classifying it as a flammable material that is not inherently flame-retardant. However, ABS can be modified through processing by adding appropriate amounts of flame retardants to achieve different levels of flame retardancy.

Flame-retardant ABS achieves enhanced flame retardancy by incorporating flame retardants (such as brominated, phosphorus-based, or halogen-free flame retardants), typically meeting the UL94 V-0 flame retardancy standard.

Flame-retardant ABS retains the excellent mechanical properties of standard ABS, including good impact resistance, heat resistance, and chemical resistance. Its tensile strength and toughness make it suitable for a wide range of applications.
